Homework: An Unnecessary Evil? … Surprising Findings From New Research (##) Share this article. Essay Test? An unnecessary evil? … Surprising Findings From New Research. Resume Services Boise? A brand-new study on the academic effects of homework offers not only some intriguing results but also a lesson on how to read a study — and a reminder of the importance of doing just that: reading studies (carefully) rather than relying on essay test summaries by journalists or even by the researchers themselves. Essay Test? Let’s start by gmat practice test, reviewing what we know from resume writing boise earlier investigations.[1] First, no research has ever found a benefit to assigning homework (of any kind or in any amount) in elementary school. In fact, there isn’t even a positive correlation between, on practice test the one hand, having younger children do some homework (vs. none), or more (vs. less), and, on beach the other hand, any measure of achievement. If we’re making 12-year-olds, much less five-year-olds, do homework, it’s either because we’re misinformed about gmat practice what the evidence says or because we think kids ought to have to do homework despite what the evidence says. Essay Practice Test? Second, even at the high school level, the research supporting homework hasn’t been particularly persuasive. There does seem to be a correlation between homework and test, standardized test scores, but (a) it isn’t strong, meaning that homework doesn’t explain much of the brainstorming variance in scores, (b) one prominent researcher, Timothy Keith, who did find a solid correlation, returned to gmat test, the topic a decade later to enter more variables into the equation simultaneously, only to discover that the improved study showed that homework had no effect after all[2], and (c) at on funeral blues, best we’re only gmat practice, talking about a correlation — things that go together — without having proved that doing more homework causes test scores to go up. (Take 10 seconds to see if you can come up with other variables that might be driving both of these things.) Third, when homework is history of pirenne thesis, related to test scores, the connection tends to gmat essay, be strongest — or, actually, least tenuous — with math. If homework turns out to be unnecessary for students to succeed in writing essay practice, that subject, it’s probably unnecessary everywhere. Along comes a new study, then, that focuses on the neighborhood where you’d be most likely to find a positive effect if one was there to be found: math and science homework in gmat practice test, high school. Like most recent studies, this one by Adam Maltese and his colleagues[3] doesn’t provide rich descriptive analyses of what students and history of pirenne thesis, teachers are doing.

Rather, it offers an aerial view, the kind preferred by essay practice test, economists, relying on two large datasets (from the thesis of theory on National Education Longitudinal Study [NELS] and the Education Longitudinal Study [ELS]). Thousands of students are asked one question — How much time do you spend on homework? — and statistical tests are then performed to discover if there’s a relationship between that number and how they fared in their classes and on standardized tests. It’s easy to miss one interesting result in gmat, this study that appears in a one-sentence aside. When kids in these two similar datasets were asked how much time they spent on math homework each day, those in the NELS study said 37 minutes, whereas those in the ELS study said 60 minutes. There’s no good reason for such a striking discrepancy, nor do the authors offer any explanation. They just move right along — even though those estimates raise troubling questions about the whole project, and essay on funeral blues, about all homework studies that are based on self-report. Essay Practice? Which number is descriptive describing beach, more accurate? Or are both of them way off? There’s no way of knowing.

And because all the conclusions are tied to that number, all the conclusions may be completely invalid.[4] But let’s pretend that we really do know how much homework students do. Did doing it make any difference? The Maltese et al. study looked at the effect on test scores and on grades. They emphasized the latter, but let’s get the former out essay, of the of relativity on way first. Was there a correlation between the amount of homework that high school students reported doing and their scores on standardized math and science tests? Yes, and it was statistically significant but “very modest”: Even assuming the existence of a causal relationship, which is by no means clear, one or two hours’ worth of homework every day buys you two or three points on a test. Is that really worth the practice frustration, exhaustion, family conflict, loss of time for other activities, and potential diminution of brainstorming, interest in learning? And how meaningful a measure were those tests in the first place, since, as the authors concede, they’re timed measures of mostly mechanical skills? (Thus, a headline that reads “Study finds homework boosts achievement” can be translated as “A relentless regimen of gmat essay practice test, after-school drill-and-skill can raise scores a wee bit on tests of rote learning.”) But it was grades, not tests, that Maltese and of pirenne, his colleagues really cared about. They were proud of having looked at transcript data in order to figure out “the exact grade a student received in each class [that he or she] completed” so they could compare that to how much homework the essay test student did.

Previous research has looked only at students’ overall grade-point averages. And the essay result of this fine-tuned investigation? There was no relationship whatsoever between time spent on homework and course grade, and “no substantive difference in grades between students who complete homework and those who do not.” This result clearly caught the researchers off-guard. Frankly, it surprised me, too. When you measure “achievement” in practice test, terms of grades, you expect to see a positive result — not because homework is academically beneficial but because the same teacher who gives the assignments evaluates the students who complete them, and the final grade is often based at least partly on whether, and to what extent, students did the homework.

Even if homework were a complete waste of practice, time, how could it not be positively related to course grades? And yet it wasn’t. Again. Even in high school. Essay Test? Even in math. The study zeroed in on essay practice specific course grades, which represents a methodological improvement, and the moral may be: The better the essay practice test research, the less likely one is to find any benefits from history of pirenne thesis homework. (That’s not a surprising proposition for a careful reader of essay practice test, reports in this field. Brainstorming? We got a hint of that from essay Timothy Keith’s reanalysis and also from the fact that longer homework studies tend to resume writing boise, find less of an effect.[5]) Maltese and his colleagues did their best to reframe these results to minimize the stunning implications.[6] Like others in this field, they seem to have approached the gmat essay practice test topic already convinced that homework is necessary and potentially beneficial, so the only question we should ask is How — not whether — to assign it. But if you read the results rather than just the authors’ spin on them — which you really need to do with the work of others working in this field as well[7] — you’ll find that there’s not much to prop up the belief that students must be made to work a second shift after they get home from writing services boise school. The assumption that teachers are just assigning homework badly, that we’d start to see meaningful results if only it were improved, is harder and harder to justify with each study that’s published. If experience is any guide, however, many people will respond to these results by repeating platitudes about the importance of practice[8], or by complaining that anyone who doesn’t think kids need homework is coddling them and failing to prepare them for the “real world” (read: the pointless tasks they’ll be forced to do after they leave school). Gmat Essay? Those open to evidence, however, have been presented this fall with yet another finding that fails to find any meaningful benefit even when the study is set up to thesis of theory on, give homework every benefit of the doubt.

1. It’s important to remember that some people object to homework for gmat essay practice test reasons that aren’t related to the dispute about services whether research might show that homework provides academic benefits. They argue that (a) six hours a day of academics are enough, and kids should have the gmat practice chance after school to explore other interests and develop in other ways — or be able simply to relax in essay, the same way that most adults like to relax after work; and (b) the decision about what kids do during family time should be made by families, not schools. Let’s put these arguments aside for test now, even though they ought to be (but rarely are) included in any discussion of the topic. 2. Brainstorming? Valerie A. Cool and Timothy Z. Keith, “Testing a Model of School Learning: Direct and Indirect Effects on Academic Achievement,” Contemporary Educational Psychology 16 (1991): 28-44. 3. Adam V. Maltese, Robert H. Tai, and Xitao Fan, “When Is Homework Worth the Time? Evaluating the test Association Between Homework and Achievement in High School Science and Math,” The High School Journal , October/November 2012: 52-72. Abstract at http://ow.ly/fxhOV. Essay On Funeral? 4. Other research has found little or no correlation between how much homework students report doing and essay practice, how much homework their parents say they do. When you use the parents’ estimates, the correlation between homework and achievement disappears. See Harris Cooper, Jorgianne Civey Robinson, and blues, Erika A. Essay Test? Patall, “Does Homework Improve Academic Achievement?: A Synthesis of Research, 1987-2003,” Review of Educational Research 76 (2006): 1-62.

5. To put it the other way around, studies finding the biggest effect are those that capture less of descriptive, what goes on in the real world by virtue of being so brief. View a small, unrepresentative slice of a child’s life and it may appear that homework makes a contribution to achievement; keep watching, and that contribution is eventually revealed to be illusory. Gmat Essay Practice Test? See data provided — but not interpreted this way — by brainstorming, Cooper, The Battle Over Homework, 2nd ed. (Thousand Oaks, CA: Corwin, 2001). 6. Even the practice title of their article reflects this: They ask “When Is Homework Worth the Time?” rather than “ Is Homework Worth the Time?” This bias might seem a bit surprising in the case of the study’s second author, Robert H. Tai. He had contributed earlier to another study whose results similarly ended up raising questions about the test value of homework. Practice Test? Students enrolled in college physics courses were surveyed to determine whether any features of their high school physics courses were now of use to them. At first a very small relationship was found between the amount of homework that students had had in high school and how well they were currently faring.

But once the of pirenne thesis researchers controlled for other variables, such as the essay test type of classes they had taken, that relationship disappeared, just as it had for Keith (see note 2). The researchers then studied a much larger population of students in college science classes – and writing practice test, found the same thing: Homework simply didn’t help. See Philip M. Essay Practice? Sadler and Robert H. Tai, “Success in Introductory College Physics: The Role of High School Preparation,” Science Education 85 [2001]: 111-36.

Effects of Dog Training Programs on Prisoners Essay Sample. Dog training/therapy programs are becoming increasingly popular because there have been widespread reports about the positive effects and gmat essay practice test, benefits that such programs provide to prisoners. The positive effects include lower recidivism rates, and associated lower costs to the state. The purpose of resume writing boise, this study is to review earlier researches in regard to the effects of animal training/therapy, especially dog training/therapy, to prisoners. Gmat? A brief discussion on animal assisted therapy will first be given, and then the psychosocial effects of on funeral, dog training to gmat essay practice prisoners will be examined.

A thorough knowledge of the positive effects of dog training/therapy to prisoners will most likely provide us with a less costly, and yet very efficient prisoner rehabilitation method. Effects of Dog Training Programs on essay on funeral blues Prisoners. When we talk about gmat, prisons, the initial thought that comes to mind is punishment. According to Allen “the three objectives of federal prisons include: having the descriptive describing beach, prisoners recognize authority, instilling “an inmate work ethic”, and enhancing the morale of the prison staff.” Allen (1998, p. 8). In short, the goal of gmat essay test, prisons is to teach prisoners a lesson. However, imprisonment alone is not a sufficient experience to teach prisoners a lesson. Perhaps, a more effective way to teach prisoners a lesson is through rehabilitating them. Aside from lowering costs of incarceration, rehabilitation can help in making prisoners functioning members of the boise, society. Prisons use various methods of rehabilitation. Test? “One of the most popular methods of rehabilitation used today is perhaps through animal training/therapy, where animals such as dogs and horses are used to thesis on teach inmates life-enhancing skills.” Strimple (2003). Practice Test? The bond between humans and animals stretches back from early history, but it wasn’t until recently that a correlation was “acknowledged between this bond and the emotional health of humans.” Blackman (2006). The most popular animals used in prison-based animal programs (PAPs) are dogs.

Studies have shown that the mere presence of a dog increases the sense security of people around it. Blues? Dogs have been used for essay guarding flocks, tracking, hunting, search and rescue, leading the blind, and in assisting the deaf and physically challenged, and now they are being used to teach prison inmates life-enhancing skills. The purpose of this study is to review earlier researches regarding the effects of animal, especially dog, training/therapy to prisoners. A brief discussion on animal assisted therapy is first given then the practice, psychosocial effects of dog training programs to prisoners are examined. Vocational or professional benefits of dog training programs to prisoners are also investigated. Knowledge of the positive effects of dog training/therapy to prisoners provides us with a less costly yet effective rehabilitation method. The birth of animal-assisted therapy can be attributed to two contributors.

One of these is the Secretary of Interior Franklin K. Lane and Dr. William Alanson White, superintendent at the Government Hospital for the Insane (now known as St. Elizabeth Hospital) in Washington. In his letter to essay practice Dr. Thesis On? White dated on August 12, 1919, Secretary Lane suggested the hospital to have some dogs so that the men confined in the hospital will have someone to play with to which the doctor replied affirmatively. “Ever since then, animal-assisted therapy has been widely used by most institutions ranging from medical to schools, shelters, foster cares, courtrooms and prisons.” Wirth (2005). Animal therapy has been widely used in prisons. Essay Test? Animal therapy programs for the Department of Correction are operated in at least 15 different states and in one Federal Penitentiary. “As with other animal-assisted therapy programs, the prisoners are taught to boise interact with different animal species.” Strimple (2003). Practice Test? However, animal-assisted programs in prisons have a profound difference. Brainstorming? Prisoners not only interact with the animals; they also train them. The first successful animal therapy program in gmat a place where individuals are confined happened at the Lima State Hospital for the Criminally Insane (now Oakwood Forensic Centre) in Lima, Ohio. “The institution is the first formal program to use a maximum-security population.” Furst (2006). David Lee, a psychiatric social worker, initiated the brainstorming, program in January 1975.

He was struck by the improvement of some men who had come across, and cared for an injured bird. A patient reportedly found an injured sparrow in the prison yard. He managed to gmat practice test smuggle the bird into a ward, where animals are not allowed, and the patients are the institutions most depressed and on funeral, unresponsive patients. For the first time, the patients in this ward worked like a group to heal and practice test, take care of the scientific on, injured bird. The patients soon began to practice relate to writing essay practice the staff well, which the staff noted.

This experience led to the hospital conducting a study on the therapeutic benefits of animals. The study compared two identical wards, where one ward had pets and the other did not. “The study found that the ward with pets needed fewer amounts of practice test, medications than usual and had decreased violence. Furthermore, no suicide attempts were reported. On the other hand, the ward without pets had eight suicide attempts recorded during the same period.” Lee (1983). Several animals may be used in the therapy. Birds, dogs, cats, and several semi-domesticated and trained wild animals have been used.

However, man’s best friend has always been the of relativity on, most popular option. Some dog breeds have been preferentially useful and essay practice, are more efficient than other breeds. The dogs are bred for a long time for services qualities of interacting with people. Almost all dog breeds and even mongrels are known to participate. It is gmat essay practice test, more effective to look to the individual dog than to deal with breed issues. The idea of dog training was introduced to the Washington Correction Centre for Women (WCCW) by Kathy Quinn, now Sister Pauline. Together with Dr. Essay Test? Leo Bustad, Sister Pauline established a dog-training program at WCCW. In this program, the women prisoners trained dogs rescued from the Tacoma-Pierce County Humane Society. The program benefited not just the women inmates, who were reported to have increased self-esteem, but the community and the animals as well.

The dogs, which were supposed to be killed, were trained to assist people with disabilities with their special needs. “Recognizing the benefits of gmat essay, a dog-training program, Sister Pauline has helped other correctional facilities to establish their own dog training programs. Once prisons are convinced of the benefits provided by animal training programs, these programs will certainly increase in number.” Strimple (2003). Thus, this paper will provide brief accounts of the positive effects of history thesis, dog training programs to prisoners from earlier researches. According to Lai (1998), “a dog-training program has treatment and vocational benefits depending upon its program design.” Treatment benefits provide prisoners with a positive psychosocial experience while vocational benefits give inmates a chance to renew their life through vocational, or even professional, opportunities.” Studies have shown that holding or petting an animal will cause a lowering of blood pressure in humans, relieves strain and tension, and gmat essay practice test, can draw out a person from loneliness and depression. Dog adoption programs in penitentiaries have been conducted to help prisoners cope with depression. History? Inmates, with the help of dog rescue community groups and volunteers, “provide obedience training to rescued dogs, along with continuing education for foster pups being trained as therapy dogs.” Blackman (2006). Reviews of dog training programs reported significant improvements in the attitude and essay, behaviour of writing services, inmates participating in such programs. One of the first institutions to adopt the dog-training program was the Purdy Treatment Centre for Women, a maximum-security prison in Washington. In this program, inmates are taught to train dogs with the help of a former prison inmate. The program began in 1981 under the supervision of the practice test, People Partnership Program.

Inmates signed up in Tacoma Community College for an 11-week class and then were paired with local shelter dogs. They were taught training, grooming and job-seeking skills through classroom and hands on lessons. Administrators initially feared that there would be incidences of animal abuse but the reverse was the thesis of theory of relativity on, case. Gmat Practice Test? Hines observed that; “the inmates actually became concerned with animal welfare and brainstorming, thus became more cooperative. Furthermore, they learned a lot of self-control.” Hines, L. M. (1983). Around the practice test, same period, Lorton Prison, a prison chapter in Virginia, built a similar program, with some help from a veterinarian of the brainstorming, national People-Animals-Love group. The program director reported that “inmates, through sharing, are learning to practice trust one another… Animals bring out humanity; they bring out the best in all of us.” Arkow (1998, p. 13). Moneymaker and Stimple also conducted an evaluation of the treatment effects of animal training programs by examining disciplinary records. They reported that “inmates who participated in the program had reduced feelings of isolation and frustration”, and that they “showed considerable change in their outlook toward others and their sense of self-worth, as well as their sense of history of pirenne, achieving a better goal in test life.” Moneymaker and history of pirenne thesis, Strimple (1991, p. Gmat Practice Test? 148).

At about the same period, Harbolt and Ward conducted another review evaluating a program where incarcerated older teenagers were taught to train unwanted shelter dogs for three weeks. In addition to learning canine health and medicine, participants were also responsible for cleaning their dog’s kennel, exercising, socializing and grooming their dogs. Services Boise? The researchers found that teenagers became more compassionate and dedicated to their tasks. Gmat Essay Practice? Furthermore, they learned how it feels to resume writing services boise give and gmat practice, receive a positive reward in return. Harbolt and Ward (1991).

Prisons outside US also reported positive treatment effects of dog training programs. In 1994, Walsh and Mertin evaluated a dog training program in a prison in Australia by writing essay measuring the reports of participants. Essay Test? After a six-month period, they found that “participants had significant improvements in their self-esteem and levels of depression.” Graham (2000). Another program aimed a bringing prisoners and descriptive essay describing beach, abandoned dogs together is Project Pooch at McLaren Juvenile Correctional Facility in Woordburn, Oregon. Its principal, Joan Dalton, initiated the program in 1993. Test? In 1999 it became a non-profit organization and consequently hired a project manager. Students are taught dog grooming and training, as well as attending to the health needs of the animals. Brainstorming? Merriam-Arduini evaluated the gmat test, program in her dissertation; studying recidivism, reformation and behavioural changes made by the incarcerated youth brought about by studying dog training.

She reported in her abstract that. The findings indicate that there is zero recidivism of POOCH participants that the program assists to meet judicial orders and educational expectations with high percentages. Based on survey responses from the adults there appears to be a marked behaviour improvement in areas of descriptive essay beach, respect for authority, social interaction and leadership. The youth provided descriptors of change and gmat practice test, growth in areas of honesty, empathy, nurturing, social growth, understanding, confidence level and essay practice test, pride of accomplishment. Merriam-Arduini (2000). Several similar programs have been adopted in different penitentiaries. These programs are based on gmat essay practice mutual respect and dignity.

An example of this is a program where inmates in prisons train dogs to assist the disabled. Thesis On? The dogs are then placed with someone who needs a specially trained dog to assist them. Also, in other prison programs future assistance dogs and guide dogs are raised and essay, trained for the blind, thus cutting back on the time that disabled persons would have had to wait for services boise a dog that can assist them. Administrators of practice test, dog training program at Colorado’s Canon City noted that inmates who participated in the program have reduced illegal drug use. Participants also showed significant improvements in self-confidence, patience and respect, both for people and animals.

In another dog training program, inmates take unwanted dogs from animal shelters, then groom and train them to be good citizens. They are then placed back into the community as “paroled pets”. This gives the dogs a second chance in life, exactly what the prisoners are wishing for in their own life. An example of this is the Prison Dog Project. This is the realization of what the Prison Pet Partnership Program has provided over the years to essay practice test the inmates who work with the gmat test, dogs (Prison Dog Project, 2007). Resume Writing Services Boise? It helps to essay test bring a sense of calm in the institutional setting. The dogs are also a bridge between the inmates and the guards as well as with a disabled person to people in the community. The prison dog programs help the inmates learn how to become selfless, thus giving something back to society.

The inmates learn needed skills in order to help them get jobs when they are released. “They also learn responsibility, patience, tolerance, as well as being good trainers with kindness and love.” (Prison Dog Project, 2007). Without programs like these, inmates may succumb to solitude long enough for them to brainstorming become aloof with the other prison inmates. Aside from giving them training in pet management, persistence and care may be cultivated and gmat test, aid them to become better persons when they get back into the world out side the prisons. Brainstorming? Having pets in prison may not only solve problems of boredom, it is practice, a reflection of the government’s efforts to give former law benders a second chance to history thesis enjoy life. As a therapy, this program may lessen their longing for the outside world. Gmat Practice Test? It may even make their prison life enjoyable and less tiresome. They may even forget the years that pass by. Arkow (1998) explains that “inmates feel a sense of security when they are with the dogs they trained.” As Furst (2006) stresses, “The companionship that develops is writing boise, also a source of security in an adversarial environment”.

Furthermore, the prisoners “experience interaction with a living being that has no interest in gmat their past mistakes.” Furst (2006). Inmates whose lives lack the sense of touch and of belonging feel a sense of of theory of relativity on, unconditional love from gmat essay practice test animals that are able to “stimulate a kind of love and caring that is not poisoned or inhibited by prisoners.” Beck and Katcher (1996). Arkow (1998) explains that “the mere presence of a dog can be therapeutic.” For others, it is the sense that the activity is in someway useful to someone else – for example doing physical therapy by grooming the dog is something the thesis of relativity, dog enjoys so the person feels good about gmat practice test, making the brainstorming, effort. Some individual attribute the benefit to the fact that the new scheme has invariably broken the routines. Several explanations have been formulated to go beyond the reasons of the benefits from pet therapy. For others it is deeply meaningful, they may talk about the visit for days afterward. Gmat Essay Test? Some people have withdrawn from human interaction, but will talk to the pet.

The pet may bridge two different peoples to communicate, or bring up pleasant memories. In many cases the benefits offered by visiting pets are the same as those offered by Animal Assisted Therapy, the difference being that the there is no prescribed course of treatment and no recording of the effects on the individual. Dog training programs to do not just provide benefits to the psychological well-being of the prisoners but to essay describing beach their employ-ability as well. Lai (1998) stresses that “dog training programs help inmates learn to set and achieve their goals. Inmates learn to be responsible and dedicated to the tasks assigned to them as well as respect for both people and animals.” The Prison Pet Partnership Program gives inmate trainers the essay practice test, opportunity to learn valuable pet industry-related vocational skills to use in scientific thesis of theory finding employment when they resume their lives outside of gmat practice test, prison. In addition to training, boarding and grooming dogs, inmates also gain clerical skills by on funeral blues working in our office. They receive monetary stipends for their work; others are in an apprenticeship program. The dogs spend a good deal of time with their trainers within the prison community. This allows other inmates to benefit from the presence of the dogs even though they are not directly involved with the program. Test? Pauline (2007).

The Coleman Federal Complex, a minimum-security work camp for women in Coleman, Florida, has built a dog training program through the help of Donna Bucella, the US attorney in Tampa, Florida, and Julie Aichroth, director of South-eastern Guide Dogs, Inc. The inmates “provide advanced training to dogs on assisting individuals with impaired vision.” Brink (2005). Through this program, the inmates learn how to be veterinary assistants providing them with a vocational benefit that they can pursue once they are released. In fact, once the inmates are released, they can attend a two-year vocational course on animal training and eventually earn a certificate as veterinary technician. Strimple (2003). The Animal in the Military Helping Individuals (AIMHI) program was established in practice 1994. In this program, the US army inmates at gmat practice, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas and brainstorming, Fort Knox, Kentucky trained dogs that would assist physically challenged people. Aside from training dogs to assist the physically challenged, inmates were also taught animal husbandry and practice, human and animal behaviour. “This program provides vocational training and helps the history of pirenne, men in their transition back to civilian life.” Strimple (2003). In fact, in this program, 50 men already received certificates of training. This vocational opportunity stems from the fact that prisoners are taught about animal caring and practice, handling. They are taught not just to simply take care of the animals.

They also study their grooming, health and diet. There are some programs that provide certification in one or more areas of animal care. Some inmates receive contacts from shelter or volunteer agency and veterinarians that hire participants and request for their release, due to their participation in the program. All these programmes provide job opportunities to prisoners, which can renew their life once they are released. Effects on the Community as a Whole. Dog-training programs do not benefit the prisoners alone. Writing Essay Practice Test? They also benefit the community as a whole.

Dogs that would have otherwise been euthanized were trained to do tasks that are beneficial to essay practice test people. Moreover, most dog training programs are designed such that inmates train dogs to assist people with disabilities. The dog training program established by Sister Pauline at WCCW not just benefited the resume, inmates who participated in the program. The dogs were trained as helpers to people with special needs thus benefiting the community of disabled as well. One particular example is practice test, Sue Miller, a woman convicted of murder.

Sue successfully trained two dogs Glory and Sheba. Glory was assigned to help a young man with birth defects confined to a wheelchair named Burt. Glory was able to of relativity help Burt carry books, negotiate sidewalk curbs and elevators and pick up dropped objects (Strimple, 2003). Sheba, on the other hand, was assigned to a 14-year old girl named Angie who suffered from severe epileptic seizures. Through Sue’s training, Sheba was able to recognize an impending attack.

Consequently, the mere presence of Sheba brought a sense of security to Angie, which eventually led to a decrease in the number of gmat essay test, seizures Angie experienced. Dog training programs also appear to thesis of theory on be a cost-effective way of rehabilitating inmates. Gmat Essay? Robert Kent, superintendent of the Sanger B. History? Powers Correctional Centre in test Oneida, Wisconsin reported that since they started their dog training program in 1997, 68 inmates who participated in the program were already released and none has returned to prison. This results to history of pirenne thesis reduced incarceration costs. Susan Bass, director of the AIMHI program, also relates the lower costs of dog training programs. Aside from the benefit of providing vocational training to men, the program provides a lower cost for the state. Bass relates that costs are low because “their only expenses are the professional staff salaries, dog food, and supplies.” Strimple (2003). In the civilian world, the expense of training may cost from essay practice $10,000 to $12,000 but in the military, the thesis of theory, expenses averaged $4,000 only. Although there is little research regarding the cost-saving benefits of dog training programs, testimonials from different programs assert that dog training programs is an effective cost-saving way to rehabilitate prisoners. Current Prison-based Dog-training Programs.

Dog training programs are becoming increasingly popular in prisons. Despite the opposition from some who believe that prisons are only for gmat essay practice test punishment, others overcame this belief and helped establish several prison-based dog-training programs. Aside from the essay, ones previously mentioned, there are many other facilities that have already adopted this program. Pilot Dogs, Inc., of gmat essay practice, Ohio (PDIO) in Columbus, Ohio, is essay beach, one of the significant dog training programs developed (Strimple, 2003). PDIO had its first dog-training program in 1992 at the Ohio Reformatory for Women in Marysville, Ohio. Gmat Practice? Now, PDIO has established its program in 7 prisons in Ohio and 1 in West Virginia.

The Downeast Correctional Facility, a medium-security prison in Maine, has already established its own successful dog-training program. In this program, after one year of training, the dogs receive initial tests. The dogs that pass then move on history to training as service dogs with the gmat essay practice test, National Education for Assistance Dog Services (NEADS). It is resume writing boise, reported that “more than half of the 53 dogs in the graduating class of essay test, NEADS were trained by inmates.” Gold (2006). The Puppies Behind Bars program runs another program of this type. Gloria Gilbert Stoga founded it in New York in brainstorming 1997. Stoga took five rejected puppies from and gave them to inmates to gmat be trained. The success of the dog training of inmates gave birth to writing test the Puppies Behind Bars program.

The program has already trained dogs, 87 percent of which moved on to a more rigorous training. Today, after recognizing the benefits provided by dog training programs, many have already followed suit. It is predicted that dog training programs will become more popular once its effects to the prisoners and community as a whole has been established. Dog training programs are becoming increasingly popular, due to test reports regarding its positive effects. Dog-training programs prove to be helpful especially to prisoners. Of Pirenne Thesis? Inmates who participated in dog training programs feel that they live better lives because they sense that they are now of service to the society from which they once took.

They feel a sense of unconditional love from the animals they train who have no interest with their past mistakes. Studies have also shown that dog training, and animal training in general, brings about significant improvements in the behaviour of the gmat practice, participants. Aside from these psychosocial effects, these programs also provide job opportunities to participants because of the knowledge they gain. The human and animal community benefit as well. The animals that would have been otherwise killed served a better purpose. These animals were helpful to people especially those who are physically challenged. This helpfulness to the community as a whole provides inmates with a feeling that they can now serve their community and beach, thus atone for their past mistakes. Since there is little research regarding this study, it is practice test, highly recommended that such a research should be undertaken in order to describing beach convince the public that dog training programs is beneficial.
