Ashbourne College#039;s Psychology Blog. Q1. Writing In Uk? Outline and evaluate two social psychological theories of aggression (e.g. Hurricane Paper? social learning theory, deindividuation) • Social learning theory= originated from work of Gabriel Tarde (1912) Learning= relatively permanent change in behaviour due to article experience. • Classical behaviourism= direct experience (classical/operant conditioning)/ • Neo-behaviourism= indirect/vicarious experience (observational) • Theory claims we learn aggression primarily through observation of significant people around us= Modelling people who are similar (age/sex) or higher status (parent/teacher) Key characteristics of Imitation: 1. Behaviour of deserted role models. In Uk? 2. Copying behaviour of a higher status. 3. Hurricane Camille Paper? Degree of writing companies in uk contact with role model. 4. Degree of understanding of the behaviour. • Tarde= these are ways social behaviour and responses could be influenced by the actions of others. • Tarde combines both logic of social/cognitive psychology in kim rudyard social cognitive perspective of in uk human behaviour-= behaviour motivated by hurricane camille research inherent psychological factors/ socio-environmental factors: • Individual and social environment linked= reciprocal determinism. SLT consists of four basic processes: 1. Attention= observation- watching the behaviour. 2. Retention= cognitive process schema- storing the behaviour.

3. Reproduction= behaviour- copying behaviour. 4. Motivation= state- having reason for displaying behaviour. • SLT= helps in explaining inconsistencies of aggressive behaviour=where we learn to act/or not- be aggressive depending on different situations/contexts e.g. aggressive + domineering at companies, home/ meek + submissive at work. • Explanation of SLT based on research= ‘Bobo doll studies’ KEY STUDY-Bandura, Ross and Ross (1961) Experiment firstly involved: 72 child participants= different groups of children: experimental group –witnessed adult model kick/punch Bobo doll/ control group- witnessed non-aggressive behaviour = After- different groups were put into the toy room with Bobo doll- their behaviour was observed. They found children who had witnessed aggressive behaviour were more likely to einstein on music show aggression. Article Companies? Experiment had a well-defined way of coding the behavioural responses of the children to a measurable outcome. Laboratory research- artificial setting/lacks ecological validity. Children’s behaviour- may have produced demand characteristics (wanting to ‘please the experimenter’) Confidentiality- names of camille paper those involved maintained private- but films widely available on internet of experiment suggest compromise of confidentiality. Lack of informed consent- parents/guardians of children were not fully informed + children would have been unaware they were being filmed. Study has face validity to explain children copying through imitating role models/ the media influence on writing, aggression- such as influence of camille research paper behaviour from t.v. personalities/ celebrities: e.g. two boys (aged 10/11) murdered young boy Jamie Bulger-watched horror/violent film ‘Child’s Play 3’ before the murder.

Bandura’s research focuses society’s attention on companies, the power of the media- in areas of aggression and other related areas e.g. health (anorexia/bulimia) Criticism of imposed etic/generalisibility- by assuming that processes of learning are the same for people in all countries/cultures universally. Cultural bias= Bandura: a western researcher working in a western society. Deterministic approach- to suggest child would passively absorb the observed behaviour and einstein on music imitate it without logical thought for the implication of writing companies it. Process of decreased self-assessment/ awareness- in situations where individual identification is difficult/impossible= e.g. child with a toy mask/individual football supporter amidst a large crowd of supporters/individual in a crowded music arena. Situations were individual identification is on heroic restricted ensures changes in the normal standards of behaviour/ inhibitions are lowered- Singer, Brush and Lublin (1965): Group situation-Inhibitions reduced- Change in normal standards of behaviour/anti-social behaviour: Milgram (1964/1965) study of the situational determinants of destructive obedience= found participants were more likely to give higher levels of writing companies electrical shocks when they could not see/be seen by their victim. Similar to deeds this study: Zimbardo (1969)- study showed the effect of reduced inhibitions: He used female undergraduate participants in a ‘study of in uk learning’. The female participants play teacher/ a stooge is used to play student. ‘Student’ has to essays on heroic complete a set of tasks/ if completed wrongly= teacher gave electric shock to ‘student’. Article Writing Companies In Uk? Half the publish paper participants wore large laboratory coats/hoods to in uk cover their faces/never referred to by name= deindividuated group. Other group wore their normal clothes/given large name tags/ introduced to each other formally.

All participants could see ‘student’/were told she was either ‘honest’ or ‘conceited/critical’. Irrespective of description- deindivuated participants gave twice as many shocks of individuated ones. Gender bias- can’t generalise findings universally when only female participants were used. Lacks ecological validity- artificial setting- actions may not be in accordance to real-life situation. Ethical issues- concerning psychological effects of experiment on participants. Diener (1979) = naturalistic observation of 1,300 ‘trick-or- treating’ children in homewrok help the U.S. found that children in large groups/wearing costumes- more likely to perform anti-social actions e.g. stealing money/sweets. – the group ‘reduces the article writing companies possibility of personal identification’- behaviour may deviate from normal moral standards Limitations: Fundamental problem of this theory= doesn’t provide explanation for deeds, the fact- not all crowds/groups perform aggressive actions: Evidence linked to writing deindividuation and anti-social behaviour- but evidence also suggests deindividuation may lead to ‘prosocial’ behaviour= Gergen et al. (1973)- study in which lowered levels of individuation didn’t result in aggressive actions= in a dark room – most participants were involved in intimate contact/at least half cuddled/ about 80% of the group felt sexually aroused. Saying aggression is caused by lowering one’s inhibitions is narrow/deterministic: Postmes and Spears (1998)= meta-analysis of over 60 studies investigating deindividuation= no consistent research to essays on heroic deeds support argument- reduced inhibitions/anti-social behaviour more likely to be seen in large groups/crowded situations where anonymity is maintained. Companies? = They suggest behaviour change of individuals in large groups- more influence from a research ‘group norms’. Article In Uk? Relating this theory to groups e.g. football hooliganism is too stereotypical: Marsh et al. Deserted Island Definition? (1978)= found what might appear to be an anti-social group actually consist of several different groups-with different places in the status ‘hierarchy’/ aggression was highly ritualised rather than physically violent.

Evaluation: Challenges: Runciman (1966)= argues aggressive behaviour could be due to one’s relative deprivation- perceived difference between what you have and what you think you should have. Dollard et al. (1939) = argues aggression is the article companies in uk result of frustration building up (psychoanalysis)/ presence of environmental cues (behaviourism) that signal aggressiveness. Social theories don’t take into account potential biological factors influencing aggression= genetic/bio-chemical or neuro-anatomical causes. Q2. Outline and evaluate research relating to group display of publish paper aggression in humans. Psychologists /sociologists interested in how crowds operate. 2 disciplines differ in how they explain crowd disorder: Sociologists focus on role of the media as ‘amplifier’ of anti-social behaviour.

Psychologists more concerned about factors within group that lead to anti-social behaviour. Freud: mindset of an individual in a crowd different form that of an individual on their own= merging minds/sharing the article companies in uk same opinion/inhibitions reduced. Methodological flaws: didn’t follow hypothetico-deductive method. Influence from the group: Freud criticised – idea ‘group’ had a soul of its own: Le Bon (1896)= ‘pathological’ viewpoint: Crowd behaviour the result of individuals’ personalities. Publish Paper? Atmosphere of companies a group causes contagion- ‘group members fall under the influence of on heroic deeds a collective mind’ Group members are suggestible/views of companies group/imitating others ‘group mind’ Blummer (1939)= circular reaction causes individuals to reproduce behaviours/emotions-which intensifies/amplifies.

Convergence theory/ emergent norm theory. Motive behind group behaviour- convergence upon camille research a specific location by like-minded individuals e.g. football crowd. Turner and article writing Killian (1957)= crowd behaviour as such is ‘normless’- individual has no norms to follow they base behaviour on others around them. On Music? The distinctive behaviour- governs behaviour of the group/ taken on as he norm of the group. Convergence theory= View dictates that crowds aren’t a passive group of writing in uk people- they#8217;re a logically thinking mass of individuals View doesn’t help to einstein on music explain unpredictable crowd behaviour- because its governed by the norms identified/ accepted by the group. Theory focuses more on how individuals are rational/ the formation of crowd/ behaviour can be seen as rational/logical – more focused on irrational forces- contrasts to contagion theories. Emergent norm theory= Doesn’t take into account non-verbal processes that occur in crowds- incomplete. Article Writing? Criticised for not explaining how norms might emerge.

Berk (1974)= behaviour that looks irrational (crowd running out of building) may be rational (building on fire) Value-added theory- Neil Smelser (1963)= • Certain prerequisites (situations/conditions) are needed in order for a group /social movement to develop: stages he suggested were: Stage 1. A Research? Structural conduciveness- social situations/conditions must allow for collective action. Stage 2. Structural strain- parts of social system don’t function effectively. Article Writing Companies In Uk? Stage 3. Homewrok Help? Growth/spread of article writing generalised belief- shared view assigns casuses/determines a response/action. Stage 4. Precipitating factors- collective belief strengthened search for island, alternatives gathers pace. Stage 5. Mobilising the collective for action- leaders/workers emerge hierarchy of writing companies in uk order is research paper established. Article Writing Companies In Uk? Stage 6. Reaction of agencies of island definition social control- attempt to writing companies interfere the collective operation. Smelser argues social life/processes we follow within it affect how individuals behave= If society offers incentives/rewards that the individual is interest in- they may not think carefully about how they achieve the goal.

Value-added theory= Ethnocentric/lacks ecological validity/generalisibility= Provides a theoretical point-of-view based upon einstein on music Smelser’s own ‘Western industrialised’ educational/socio-economic background- so not accounting for important cultural differences. Logical theory- but doesn’t take into account the complexities of article writing in uk crowd behaviour- theory difficult to test- Berk (1974) – “crowd events occur with great speed, are difficult to anticipate#8230;” Elements from these theories can help to explain crowd behaviour- Hockling (1982) With groups e.g. lynch mobs= Zimbardo (2007)= argues dehumanisation is crucial to understanding ‘man’s inhumanity to essays deeds man’: Inhuman aggression of article writing companies in uk lynch mobs in USA- torture/violent murder of black people was not seen as a crime against deeds, humanity- it was seen across USA as a result of black people’s stigmatisation as ‘niggers’ so they weren’t seen as individuals= Ginzberg (1988) Most theories fail to acknowledge actions of positive crowd behaviour- Cassidy et al. (2007)=investigated crowd celebrations: Mela (1 month long Hindu festival): crowds behaved well/increased generosity/support. Article Writing Companies In Uk? Shows how crowd behaviour/ collective living can promote good/ non-aggressive behaviour/ a strong sense of common identity/close proximity- beneficial instead of being causal factor for subsequent harm. Q3. Outline and evaluate studies relating to biological explanations of human aggression. Assumption that aggression is caused by internal factors (rather than external) Influences summarised as: Biochemical influences: hormones; the essays on heroic neurotransmitter serotonin.

Brain structure influences. Aggression is the by-product of complex internal physiological processes. Researchers approached investigation of genetic factors in aggression primarily through twin and adoptions studies= to try and establish whether aggression- a product of inherited characteristic (nature) or environmental influences (nurture) KEY STUDY- Rhee and Waldman (2002)- Meta-analysis of writing in uk 51 twin and adoption studies = 87,000 individuals. Hurricane Camille Research? Anti-social behaviour operationalised in terms of: Psychiatric diagnoses-e.g. anti-social personality disorder. Calculated= genetic component of anti-social behaviour across the studies- approx. 40% Environmental contribution approx.

60% Self-report used in meta-analysis- limits reliability= as differences found as: Self-report individuals = assessed genetic component at article writing companies in uk, 39%/ individuals assessed by deserted island another person= 53% Difficult to separate genetic/environmental effects in article companies twin studies- MZ twins have more similar environmental experiences. Specific genes cause aggression- such as= Sandberg (1961)-identified (scientifically known as) the kim rudyard essay 47 XYY karyotype. Article Companies In Uk? Court-Brown’s research (1965 and 1967)- found that of a sample of 314 patients- those with XYY would be ‘best hospitalised due to an increased likelihood of homewrok help aggressive behaviour’= statement not substantiated with evidence. Media encouraged the belief XY phenomenon with films – XYY man/ Alien 3= limits potential for explaining aggression due to its deterministic focus. Aggression passed through genetic transmission- looked at through animal studies. Nelson (2006)- noted selective breeding experiments can lead to more aggressive behaviour in writing animals. Theory supported by Cairns (1983)- in study of mice.

Observational animal research has= Methodological issues: Evidence helps researchers to create more informed models. Difficult generalising findings from animals to humans/ no alternative-using humans in hurricane camille genetic research seen as unethical. Artificial settings/lacks ecological validity- to how aggression might occur in a real-life setting. Difficult to separate influence of biological genetic factors (nature) from environmental upbringing (nurture)- as extraneous variables could be causing aggression- unreliable. She examined personality traits of a sample-XYY men compared these to a sample of XY men and XXY men(thought to be more feminine) Focused on article writing in uk, levels of aggressiveness between 2 groups. Found= in all occurrences of essays on heroic deeds X (about 1 in every 1,000) only characteristic of height seemed to be linked to article writing companies the XYY condition. Levels of aggressiveness between groups fluctuated-= no definite conclusion could be drawn.

Basic measure of comparing XYY to XY male inmates in prison/ comparing evidence to general population= lacks validity. XYY research= found no consistent link between genotype/aggressive nature. Using thematic apperception testing= showed XYY tend to give more aggressive/ less anti-aggressive interpretations of images- compared to homewrok help XY men. Theilgaard concluded= issue is too complex- XYY men might seem to be more aggressive/ but tendencies didn’t mean they would perform aggressive acts/ resulting in in uk prison. Hormones influence many parts of our lives: Court cases have shown that hormonal fluctuation-woman’s pre-menstrual tension can be used as grounds for claims of temporary insanity- to reduce a charge of murder to manslaughter= R v Smith (1979) 3 All ER 605,611 (CA) Nelson (1995)- reviewed research into how hormones influence aggressive behaviour= seems to be a positive correlation between level of androgens circulating in deserted island definition the body and aggressive behaviour in female/male prisoners.

Levels of article writing androgens not measured a precise point when aggressive act performed. A Research Paper? Testosterone= androgen produced by Leydig cells in male testes/in adrenal cortex= release of hormone is rhythmic following natural circadian rhythm. Increased levels of testosterone associated with increased levels of aggression= e.g. during puberty aggression increases when androgen levels are higher. Writing In Uk? Wagner, Beuving and Hutchinson (1979)= show if a male mouse is castrated- levels of aggression reduce/ if mouse receives testosterone aggression levels increase. Research graph correlating the number of biting attacks compared to on heroic deeds the mouse (pre-castration=post-castration=given 150 microgm/day of testosterone) results show positive trend- increase in the number of biting attacks with increase of testosterone= post-castration/given testosterone. Research correlational- cannot establish cause+ effect= androgens encourage aggressive behaviour but- they could encourage social dominance/ impulsiveness/ competition. Pillay (2006)- high testosterone levels can be desirable for athletes= given link to high levels of competition/athlete’s need for more muscular bodies. Article Companies In Uk? “testosterone is a research paper only one myriad of factors that influence aggression and the effects of companies in uk environmental stimuli have at times been found to correlate more strongly” Other environmental factors e.g. temperature/noise/overcrowding have an influential role in showing aggressive behaviour. Huston et al (2007)- basal model of testosterone= more testosterone/ more competitive/dominant. Mazur and Booth (1998)- reciprocal model of testosterone= testosterone levels vary with person’s dominance.

It is the deserted island effect not cause. Study= 2,100 air force veterans- over 10 year period- four medical examinations Methodological issues: No peer review- essential in validity of companies in uk research. Longitudinal study- increased amount of data. Using veterans- unable to generalise findings- aggression could be influenced by external factors e.g. memories of the war/ or psychological factors= post-traumatic stress disorder. Serotonin neurotransmitter important in the control of aggression= low levels of serotonin- less able to kipling essay control impulsive/aggressive behaviour= Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine- 5HT)= Lenard (2008)- “low serotonin levels in article writing in uk the brain can result in impulsive behaviour/aggression/overeating/depression/alcohol abuse/violent suicide”. Normal levels of serotonin exerts a calming/inhibitory effect in research the brain. = Cases (1995) Serotonin + aggression. Article Companies In Uk? Davidson, Putnam and Larson (2000)= suggested role of serotonin-‘inhibitory function’ of island aggressive tendencies:

Compared violent criminals to non-violent= low levels of in uk serotonin in violent criminals. Animal research supports this= in on music mice- serotonin 1B receptor not functioning-found increase in aggressive behaviour. Tame domestic animals have higher levels of article writing companies in uk serotonin. Homewrok Help? Russian researchers looked at silver foxes (animals have been tamed by humans- more than 30yrs)= Found= all had higher levels of serotonin/5-HIAA. Summers et al (2005)= observed that globally acting serotonergic drugs do modify aggressive behaviour- but cannot be singularly identified as the only cause of activity in regions of the brain- that could have serotonergic effects on aggression. Mann et al. Article? (1990) = administered drug (known to deplete serotonin levels in the brain) to 35 healthy adults.

Found= among males (but not females)- hostility/aggression levels increased after treatment with the drug. Study of the negative relationship between serotonin/aggression- correlational- doesn’t establish cause+ effect relationships. Definition? Ethical issues: when using human participants-research must look after (not use) – to further understand/make better our human existence. Neurotransmitters on their own-out of context to the wider physiology of the brain-ignore influence of article writing companies brain structure on demonstrating aggressive behaviour. Brain structure/damage.

Hypothalamus/amgydala associated with aggressive responses: Bard and Mountcastle (1953)- looked at ‘rage’ in cats caused by detachment of higher/lower brain through lesioning= Concluded: hypothalamus initiates aggressive behaviour/cerebral cortex reduces behaviour. Flynn (2006)- found stimulating= lateral hypothalamus in cats- more likely show ‘predatorial aggression’. Essays Deeds? = medial hypothalamus-more likely to show ‘vicious attack behaviour’. Amgydala= in 1930’s-careful lesioning of amgydala of aggressive animals showed taming effect.= harming/causing dysfunction to in uk animal is unethical. Amgydalectomy- in humans reduces violent behaviour- but emotion is lost. Brain injury/damage to homewrok help brain can alter the processing of in uk information/ causes aggression.

Frontal cortex closely connected to hypothalamus/amgydala- damage often show: impulsive behaviour/irritability/ short temper/easily provoked. Phineas Gage- railway worker- a tamping iron- entered left side of his face= passed through jaw/up+ behind left eye/ exited through top of his head- he survived for 11 years after: Noticeable changes in essays deeds persona- formerly quiet/hard-working/shrewd character turned to very negative/aggressive individual – after result of article brain injury. Kim Rudyard Kipling? Convincing- but case study- one person- generalisibility limited/ relying on accuracy of medical notes made in 1868 by Harlow (Gage’s physician). Evidence supports the idea that the Amygdala- has influential effect on mediating aggressive responses. Companies In Uk? Animal studies- cats/rats/hamsters- show neural processed surrounding amgydala functioning= can explain aggressive changes in kim rudyard kipling essay behaviour. Difficult to generalise- animal studies to humans- human brain more complex than many animals. Potegal et al. (1994)= argue generalisation between animals and writing companies in uk humans should be more viable- human/animal differences are qualitative ( i.e. basics the same/ details different): Underlying neural circuitry related to emotional expression seems more similar- allowing for more avenues of generalisation. Blair et al. (2001) = shows in cases – humans hospitalised for psychopathic tendencies- often caused by damage to kim rudyard kipling amgydala. Supported by various findings in non-human animals. Biological explanations are reductionist as it ignores: Influence of in uk culture in aggressive behaviour- socialisation- (e.g. Arapesh tribe= Mead (1935) Aggression learned through observation of einstein on music various forms of media- Freedman (2002) Situational factors- e.g. temperature/overcrowding/noise • Showing of aggression may simply be result of frustration- ultimately becomes aggressive actions through the identification of aggressive cues in environment.

Q4. Outline and evaluate research studies into evolutionary explanations of human aggression. Aggressive behaviour by animals= Craig (1921)- provided 1st attempt understanding aggression from ethological p.o.v.- since Darwin’s work- late 1800’s. Craig- made clear- that animals- ‘even when the animal does fight, he aims not to destroy enemy, but only get rid of his presence and interference’ = Van Der Dennen (2005) Lorenz (1966)-ethologist- stressed humans are animals- show similar behaviour patterns to animals: • Four main drivers behind behaviour of animal= fear/reproduction/hunger/aggression. Functions of aggression= Help to in uk ensure fittest/strongest were selected (females select male- who offer greatest survival- form them/offspring) Ensure survival of young (parents show aggression- protecting offspring) Help to deeds distribute a species in writing companies balanced way- animals have own territories. Lorenz- idea of ritualised aggression- to explain aggressive animal behaviour e.g. stags rutting. Analysis furthered- stating animals know when to stop being aggressive (few ever kill enemy)= Gross (1998)- jackdaw behaviour= 2 jackdaws about to attack each other- if 1 displays- appeasement tactic – (showing a behaviour indicating defeat/submission)- the a research other jackdaw wont attack. Lorenz- criticised by other ethologists/academics: Lehrman (1953)- questions whether correct to article in uk make comparisons between species/assume findings for animals to humans- suggest even though 2 behaviours seem similar- cant assume underlying mechanisms the same. Aggressive behaviour by humans: • Fromm (1973)- questions Lorenz’s view= states human aggression comprises 2 forms: benign aggression/malignant aggression e.g. malignant= organised violence-gang warfare- ethnic ‘cleansing’-eradication of Jews in WW2 / benign= parent defending their child from harm by attack/ threat. Nelson (1974)- states Lorenz misses 3 basic factors that can affect aggression: Process of learning: Bandura shows people may learn aggressive behaviour through observation.

Structural causes: Nelson- suggests structural causes relate to nature of social- e.g. society without norms/rules- aggression likely to spread. Psychological causes of kim rudyard kipling aggression: highlight failings of biological approach= in animal kingdom-aggressive action directed to ‘actual enemy’- threat/challenge. In humans- aggression can be motivated by article writing companies many different personal factors e.g. mood/feelings + situational factors e.g. Deeds? heat/overcrowding. In some cases of human aggression- victims aren’t seen as fellow humans= Fromm (1964)/ Erikson (1956)- might be case in situations of unprovoked random attacks: Rapoport (1965)- suggests ‘man by virtue of his ability to article companies in uk manipulate symbols, attaches the label ‘enemy’ to entire categories of publish paper things: other animals, other people, even inanimate objects and article writing in uk ideas#8230;accordingly aggression ceases to be leads by the situation.’ Differences between animal and human aggression: Human aggression= might be adaptive/useful i.e. product of evolution.

Use of weapons means aggression is destructive/not ritualistic: Tinbergen (1968)-suggest humans only species- aggression not part of ritualistic system e.g. Einstein Essays On Music? mating- but is rooted in desire to harm another. Evolutionary explanations of human aggression. Acts of terrorists e.g. Writing Companies In Uk? 9/11 or ware in general= explained through Tinbergen’s ideas/evolutionary theory= as advances in weapon technology distancing means that aggressor doesn’t need to be physically close to the recipient of aggression: Means that appeasement/distress signals that would stop acts of kim rudyard kipling aggression no longer apply e.g. Article In Uk? plane crews who are eager to drop bombs on kipling essay, ‘targets’- would not be eager to stab/burn children/adults with their own hands. Krueger et al. (2002)- evolutionary approach concerned with how skills/methods of article writing in uk dealing with environment have evolved into behaviours used in today’s society= Many evolutionary changes seen in Pleistocene era- since then evolution has been static- Brody et al. (2004) Evolutionary psychologists believe- series of psychological mechanisms affect behaviour/don’t vary much between individuals- universal= they think behaviour witnessed linked to reproductive success of individual= likely to suggest aggression is result of sexual competition: Females invest in essay parental issues e.g. time/energy/food etc. Males compete for females- to pass on their genes= ensure reproductive success: Kenrick, Trost and Sheets (1996). Dominant image for men nowadays is ‘provider of valuable resources’- men need to be assertive/aggressive.

Waller (2002)- applied approach to explain mass killings/genocide= humans have evolved living in groups- need to define boundaries- formulating ‘in’ group (us) and ‘out’ group (them)= likely to result in aggression. Could be caused by companies in uk ancestral past- xenophobia- need for camille research, people to companies in uk feel socially dominant= holding ethnocentric perspectives- lead to acts of hurricane research aggression/violence. Buss (1999)- foolish to assume aggressive behaviour just male versus male: in women physical violence limited- partly due to physiological differences/strength- but verbal aggression is common. Writing In Uk? Female to female verbal aggression- often aimed at reducing ‘attractiveness’ of competitors- in eyes of kipling essay males= strategy – evolutionary advantage for ‘name-caller’ Influence of infidelity on article companies in uk, aggressive behaviour. Infidelity- process unfaithful to partner/ sexual relationship with another person= infidelity had impact on on music, relationship + quality of interpersonal communications between partners/others. • Psychologists argue- act of infidelity triggers emotional state within individual- as perceived threat to relationship/current status quo: Buss, Larsen, Western and Semmelroth (1992)- argue- would naturally lead to show behaviours to reduce/ eliminate threat e.g. act of writing violence/aggression • Sexual infidelity for men/women- triggers sexual jealousy= psychologists suggest cues/ triggers are different for males/females: Brunk et al. (1996)- suggest from male’s p.o.v- infidelity by female- brings uncertainty of homewrok help paternity- profound sexual jealousy/ For female who becomes pregnant after act of infidelity- associated sexual jealousy influenced not by parental uncertainty- but lack of time/economic resources- given to her/ offspring by her mate. = lack of emotional support that makes women aggression/ men’s anger/subsequent aggression- based upon suspicion of wife’s infidelity. Companies? Evolutionary psychologists- look at on heroic, infidelity from male and female perspectives to avoid gender bias into their research into writing in uk, explanations of aggression. Influence of kim rudyard essay jealousy -n ot unusual to companies in uk witness violence/ acts of aggression influenced by jealousy= Harvey, Sprecher and Wenzer (2004) Cascardi and Vivian (1995)- participants asked explain cause of hurricane camille research aggression in relationship- jealousy most commonly attributed cause. Canary, Spitzberg and writing companies in uk Semic (1998)- argue couples with relationship conflicts- reported anger/ aggression contributed by jealousy. Violent males lack effective ways of essay mediating/ responding to situation of jealousy/ compared to writing non-violent males- Holtzworth- Monroe and Anglin (1991). Haden and Hojjat (2006)- differences in sexual jealousy of young women/men= focus on aggressive responsiveness in partner rivalry situations.

2 separate studies found= men more likely than women- to consider aggressive action against rival/ women more emotionally/ behaviourally reactive. Camille Paper? In USA- Morenz and Lane (1996)- Evolutionary theory- explains jealousy as desire to writing companies in uk keep one’s mate= males have tendency to show mate tending/guarding activities – aggressive activities to avoid sexual infidelity- Buss and Shackelford (1997)/ females display behaviours less frequently. Limitations- evolutionary approach fails to explain why individuals might react in homewrok help different ways when faced with same adaptive problem: different men react in different ways when confronted with their wife’s infidelity e.g. violence, debasement, or avoiding issue (by getting drunk) Cultural differences- fails to writing companies in uk explain why some cultures seem to require male violence to attain social status/ other cultures (peaceful)- aggression leads to irreparable damage to reputation of the aggressor= Buss and Shackelford (1997)

Michael C. Vanier: computer programming skills resume. Most of my thesis work involved building realistic computer simulations of the companies in uk, brain (specifically the mammalian olfactory cortex). In the process of doing this work, I discovered that I really liked programming and I've ended up spending a lot of time learning new programming languages and programming tools just for fun. I have a particular fondness for unusual programming languages and new programming paradigms, which I guess is why I'm making a living teaching programming now ;-) I've also periodically done part-time jobs to make extra money, all of which have been programming-related. I describe my computer skills and the jobs I've worked on below. NOTE: Some parts of this document are obsolete and need an overhaul. What this means in essays on heroic practice is that I actually know and have worked on more stuff than is in this document, though I try to keep it reasonably up to date.

The HTML also needs to be cleaned up. Large programming projects I've worked on. Personal Spider, Inc. Article Writing Companies In Uk! During the dot-com boom, I was one of the core programmers in an internet startup company called Personal Spider Inc. (PSI). Kim Rudyard! I'm was also one of the company founders, was on the board of directors, and was the chief science officer. I've done a limited amount of management of other programmers as well. Due to NDAs, I can't disclose the details of the work I did with PSI, but in general it involves building internet tools for medium-sized web sites. There was a considerable amount of writing in uk pattern-recognition and language processing work involved as well, which nicely leveraged a lot of the skills I've learned in the course of my work at Caltech. Paper! The code was entirely in Python. This company failed to secure adequate funding and is now defunct. Tspice and Wedit I worked part-time for 18 months at Tanner Research Inc. as a programmer.

While there I worked on several projects, using a combination of C, C++ and in uk Python as programming languages. All of definition these involved developing tools for simulating VLSI circuits. Most of my work was on Unix platforms, mainly Sun Solaris. The projects included: Porting two graphically-oriented software packages from Windows to Unix. One package was a circuit-simulation package (Tspice), while the other was a graphical display package for visualizing the outputs of the Tspice program (Wedit). Enhancing the Tspice circuit simulation program so it could work over article writing companies in uk a network. This was Unix-specific.

Adding capabilities to the Tspice circuit simulation program; specifically, I modified the program to: support dependent voltage and current sources (VCCS, VCVS, CCCS, CCVS) whose branch characteristic equations were polynomials in the dependent source values. handle impact ionization parameters in einstein on music a broad class of transistor models. Working on adding algorithms to the Tspice simulation package to make it work on parallel computers. Gambit I worked for companies in uk several months with Richard McKelvey in einstein essays on music the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at Caltech. I'm did a variety of programming jobs involving the article writing, Gambit game-theory simulator, which is essay written in C++. Originally, I was working on building a GUI record/playback system. I built a prototype, but the project money ran out after that. Article Companies! I also ported the definition, gambit GUI to use the wxxt-1.67 implementation of wxWindows for companies Unix using Xt widgets only (i.e. which doesn't require Motif), and set up a CVS code archive. A database-backed web site This was a prototype for a commercial web site that involved collecting form data from individuals, storing the results in a database, computing values based on those results, and returning these results to the user. In other words, it was like every other commercial web site on the planet. I used Python, MySQL, PHP, and apache to build the site.

Interestingly, the person I worked for on essay this project turned out to article writing companies be dishonest, and he still owes me over $1000 for the work I did for him. GNU shogi This is my hobby project. On Heroic Deeds! GNU shogi is a program that plays shogi (Japanese chess), and it's part of the GNU project. The program is described in great detail in the link above. C++ I've worked on a couple of medium-to-large projects in C++ (the Wedit program and article in uk the Gambit game-theory simulator), mostly on maintaining, porting, and/or extending previously-existing projects. I've also written some neural network simulations in C++. I believe that C++ is better for large projects than C due to its object-oriented features. It's also probably the fastest OO language.

However, it can be difficult to hurricane camille use effectively because of its great complexity. And, as mentioned for writing in uk C, the a research paper, lack of writing in uk garbage collection discourages you from using many kinds of data structures, although C++ is at paper least far superior to C in this regard because of writing companies in uk destructors. In addition, there are freely-available conservative garbage collectors for C++ such as the Boehm-Demers GC which could in definition theory make C++ programming much more pleasant (I say in theory because I've never done it in C++, although I have done it in article writing companies C). One thing I will say about C++ is that, unlike Perl, where the deserted island definition, language seems arbitrarily complex for no good reason, the complexity in C++ is an accurate reflection of the kinds of things that are typically done in the language. Writing Companies In Uk! Whether a simpler language with equivalent power could be created is an essays on music, interesting research problem; I find it revealing that C++ is article writing in uk essentially the only language in its design space (object-oriented languages that fully support low-level programming). Modula-3 had some of C++'s low-level features but never caught on (and had much weaker OO support). Java The largest Java program I've written was a prototype neural simulator in Java (as an exploration of the language as a possible future implementation language for GENESIS). Deserted! This came to about 7000 lines of code.

Java is nicer in companies most ways than C++. It's safer, cleaner, and has very few weird features. Essays! Having automatic garbage collection is also a huge win from the writing companies, programmer's standpoint. They left out some features of C++ I liked (templates and operator overloading) but there are compilers that support those features too (and the Java standard has already generics, which solve many of the deeds, same problems that templates solved, albeit in a completely different way). The main problem with Java is speed: it's about 10-20 times slower than C when run byte-coded, and article writing companies in uk maybe 1.5-3 times slower when using a JIT (just-in-time compiler). This makes it much less attractive to people like me who do simulations, where you can never have enough speed. However, it is extremely attractive when portability is more important than speed. The Java environment is camille research paper also quite nice, and eliminates most of the hassle from in uk doing e.g. portable graphics or network programming. One thing I dislike about einstein essays on music, Java is its verbosity; code in Java is often much longer than equivalent code written in other languages because of the plethora of mandatory declarations.

Python Python is writing in uk my scripting language of paper choice. I've written innumerable little data-munging scripts in Python (several thousand lines of code). I've also made a version of the GENESIS neural simulator that used Python as its extension language instead of the writing companies in uk, standard GENESIS script language. I built a networked version of the Tspice circuit simulation program using Python to publish a research handle the networking connections between the graphical interface and the computing engine. The database-backed web site I worked on had Python code which generated thousands of lines of PHP code (!). The Personal Spider project is written entirely in article writing Python. In addition, these web pages are created from template files written in Python. I like Python because it can do everything Perl does, but it's much cleaner in design, is object-oriented, and the code is more readable than in any other computer language I know of. It's also a great extension/embedding language for large software packages.

Check out the Python home page for more details. I worked on a fairly large prototype of a commercial web site involving putting a database up on a web site where PHP was the server-side scripting language. It came to einstein essays on music about 10,000 lines of PHP code, of which about half were automatically generated (by Python scripts that I wrote :-)). Server-side scripting languages are a great idea and are essential for writing companies this kind of publish paper work. However, PHP is sucks big time as a computer language; in fact, I never want to use it again as long as I live. The way arrays are implemented is particularly hilarious. (Maybe the language has improved now; I don't know.) If I do this kind of work again I'll look into companies, alternatives such as Ruby on Rails or one of the einstein on music, Python web frameworks, or else write my own web framework.

Lisp and Scheme I've done bits and pieces of companies in uk Lisp and Scheme programming (Scheme is a dialect of einstein essays Lisp) but no very large projects. I did write a formatter for the C language in Emacs lisp which is about 400 lines long in its current version. I've written a prototype implementation of a computer language in article in uk Scheme, but I switched to Ocaml for on heroic the final implementation. I've read several books on Lisp and article writing Scheme (e.g. Abelson and Sussman's Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs and Graham's ANSI Common Lisp and paper On Lisp) and subscribe or have subscribed to writing companies in uk several mailing lists for various implementations of Scheme. On Heroic! Finally, I teach Scheme as part of the article companies in uk, CS 1 course at Caltech. I like Lisp and kipling essay Scheme a lot, because they're among the most flexible, powerful and article writing companies in uk extensible computer languages ever invented (not surprising, considering that they're based on lambda calculus). Lisp is usually thought of as an kim rudyard essay, artificial intelligence (AI) language but it's actually general-purpose; it's just that other languages aren't flexible enough for AI, so Lisp is used in that domain by default. Lisp has a prefix syntax which uses lots of parentheses that many people find ugly and hard to in uk understand, but I've found that you get used to it quickly (and I actually prefer it because it's so unambiguous). Also, most people think Lisp is slow, but it's not: several Common Lisp systems have compilers that can produce code which is hurricane camille research almost as fast as C ( e.g. within a factor of 2). A good recent example of this is Steel Bank Common Lisp.

The reason Lisp and article Scheme are important is that they're virtually the only computer languages that combine the following: full support for both imperative and homewrok help functional programming (OK, Ocaml also gives you this, but Lisp is more general). Writing! macros, which allow you to write code that writes code. These are not like macros in on heroic deeds C; Lisp macros operate on the syntactic structure of the code, not just on the string representation of code. Article Companies In Uk! Macros are one of the key elements that make it possible to implement support for new programming paradigms ( e.g. Essays! object-oriented programming, logic programming) within the language itself. Read Paul Graham's book On Lisp (currently out of print, but downloadable for free) for article companies much more on on music macros. I used to be keen on Guile, a dialect of Scheme designed to be a scripting language, but that project has had a number of problems, the article writing companies, most serious of which is hurricane camille a chronic lack of decent documentation. Right now I advocate mzscheme, the Scheme implementation for article the Dr. Scheme project.

Mzscheme is camille paper a beautifully-written version of Scheme which works well as an extension language. In addition, it has great documentation and its developers include some of the foremost names in article writing in uk the Scheme world. I encourage everyone who is essay really a serious programmer and who needs a scripting and/or extension language to look at mzscheme. Companies! Realistically, however, I know that most programmers are incredibly conservative and will never be able to get past Scheme's somewhat odd syntax. Objective CAML (Ocaml) and Standard ML These languages have strong static polymorphic type systems and mainly support functional programming with strict evaluation, although they also support imperative programming. If you understood that last statement, you probably spend WAY too much time programming :-) These languages are very interesting for serious programmers, and are very pleasant to essays deeds program in. The largest project I've done in Ocaml so far is an implementation of a dynamically-typed functional programming language (which I also designed). This language is writing basically a cross between Forth and Scheme; the Ocaml code came to about 4500 lines of code, which is pretty small for a full language implementation. Ocaml, in particular, is so great that it has become one of my languages of choice for new projects.

Just look at what it gives you: full support for homewrok help imperative, functional, and object-oriented programming; amazingly fast execution (often beats C++ on article companies in uk speed tests); strong static polymorphic type-checking (this catches a HUGE number of bugs at compile time); a very powerful type system, which lets you describe the program structurally in terms of its types so that if it passes the type checker it is almost correct by construction; type inference, so you usually don't have to declare types; a very efficient generational garbage collector; portable bytecode compilation or fast native-code compilation; a large standard library; a large user base; a powerful module system with functors and separate compilation; language customization using camlp4 (caml pretty-printer and preprocessor); a foreign function interface to kipling essay C code; and lots more ;-) Ocaml only article has two problems. First, its syntax is idiosyncratic and somewhat grungy, especially for imperative programming. The syntax is also too free-form for my taste (over 100 shift-reduce conflicts in the grammar). The other (much more serious) problem is that ocaml totally spoils you; after you get over the (admittedly large) learning curve, programming in C or C++ feels like Chinese water torture and programming in Java or Python feels like playing with children's blocks. On the positive side, you'll probably program five times as fast and spend 1/5 the homewrok help, time debugging as you would in those languages. Article In Uk! Ocaml is not a perfect programming language but it's so far ahead of the essays on heroic deeds, nearest competitor that it's just incredible. Incidentally, the CAML in writing in uk ocaml stands for Categorical Abstract Machine Language; I hope that clears that up ;-) Haskell Ah, Haskell. how do I love thee? Let me count the deserted island, ways. Writing In Uk! ;-) Haskell is my new favorite language, even though I recognize that it isn't yet suitable for many tasks.

It's the most beautiful computer language I've ever used. Homewrok Help! It is a pure functional language with lazy evaluation, type classes, and uses monads (an advanced concept that comes from category theory) to handle input/output, state transitions, and much more in a purely functional setting. Well-written Haskell code is so concise and elegant it will make you cry. If C code is one step up from assembly language, good Haskell code is one step down from poetry, or from a beautiful mathematical theorem. And one of the things I like most about writing in uk, it is that it was two of publish my students (Brandon Moore and Aaron Plattner) who were responsible for turning me on to Haskell (being a teacher has its perks). Writing! Haskell also has an incredibly rich and deep literature, a very active user base consisting of some of the homewrok help, smartest programmers in the world, and is just a joy to use. I think the big lesson of Haskell is compositionality : the writing, ability to take small things and build bigger things out of them. This is much like the component concept you see in essays deeds large-scale programming, but brought down to the micro-level: every piece of code in Haskell is essentially a black-box component, because the language is completely referentially transparent (that's what purely functional means, after all). I used to think I understood functional programming well when I programmed in Scheme and Ocaml, but learning Haskell has shown me that pure functional programming is writing companies in uk potentially much more powerful than impure functional programming (which is what Scheme and Ocaml represent). I could go on for pages about how great Haskell is, but instead I'll just point you to the Haskell home page. Forth I've played around with Forth for years and have done some simple neural network simulations in kim rudyard it.

Forth is article a low-level but extensible and interactive threaded-interpreted language which is mainly used for embedded systems programming due to einstein essays on music its low memory usage. It has an unusual stack-based postfix syntax that is not conducive to writing readable code. It's a lot of fun to play with, because you can extend any part of the language (the implementation is completely exposed, for better or for worse), and most of the language is written in article writing in uk itself. It's also fast for an interpreted language. However, it's too slow for serious simulation work and island definition too difficult to use for scripting, so I don't use it anymore, except when I get bored :-) To me, Forth is a fascinating example of a language that is article writing in uk too simple for its own good i.e. it violates Einstein's dictum of make everything as simple as possible, but no simpler.

In Forth's case, the excessive simplicity of the parser means that simple grouping operations are unreasonably difficult (unlike in Lisp/Scheme, where the essays on heroic, parentheses take care of grouping). I believe there is room for higher-level stack-based languages inspired by Forth and article writing companies Lisp, and I even implemented one ;-) That project is currently languishing in the I'll-get-back-to-it-when-I-get-bored category. GENESIS neural simulation system The GENESIS neural simulation system forms a large part of my thesis work. GENESIS includes a simple script language of its own called SLI (which means, imaginatively enough, Script Language Interpreter). SLI is an atrocious scripting language; it would take pages to describe how awful it is. However, one virtue of GENESIS as a whole is that you can add new data types and commands to the language fairly easily. Matlab Matlab is the well-known data-analysis and numerical computation program. I've used Matlab for lots of small data-analysis jobs and (mainly) for graphics. I dislike the Matlab language, which is very poorly designed, but Matlab's numerical routines are very useful and the graphics that Matlab produces are excellent. Mathematica I use Mathematica whenever I have a really gnarly algebra or calculus problem to deal with.

I like it; it's a lot like Lisp with a nicer interface (although the Mathematica people don't give credit where it's due e.g. to the MacSyma program which predated it). However, I don't like proprietary software, so I don't use it much. I'd love to homewrok help see an open-source program of comparable abilities. Unix shells: sh, csh, zsh I've written loads of article writing companies in uk shell scripts in sh, csh, and zsh (usually sh). I nearly always switch to Python when the job gets sufficiently big (which usually means over twenty lines long), but shell scripts are great for gluing other programs together.

Much of the homewrok help, data analysis work I've done has involved a combination of article writing companies shell scripts, Python scripts, and C programs, usually strung together in a long pipeline. make Make is the program used to coordinate a complex series of homewrok help commands when compiling a program. It took me a while to realize that make is a programming language in its own right, albeit one very different from the ones I'm used to; it's more like a rule-based AI language such as Prolog. The GENESIS Makefiles are pretty nasty and I've hacked on them extensively. I've also worked on article writing companies in uk lots of Makefiles for other projects I've been involved in.

I use GNU make exclusively; it has some very useful extensions over hurricane paper standard makes. Perl Perl is a scripting language which combines the writing, power of a lot of Unix tools into homewrok help, one language ( e.g. Article Writing! sh, sed, awk, and some of homewrok help C). I've written many small throwaway scripts in Perl. Article Companies! The largest thing I did in Perl was a series of einstein scripts to convert files representing neural morphologies into files representing simpler morphologies that are roughly equivalent. This is an essential part of article companies my thesis work, and was about 2500 line of Perl code.

Perl is quite fast for a scripting language, and is good for text and island file manipulation, but it's very complex and I loathe its weird context dependencies and its syntax, which is full of funny magic characters and writing companies in uk assorted bogosities too numerous to paper name here. Article Writing In Uk! I also hate the fact that there are way too many ways of doing exactly the same thing (or much worse, ALMOST the a research paper, same thing but not quite). Writing Companies! I find that most of the complexity in Perl is totally unnecessary and is mainly the deeds, result of writing in uk bad design choices made early on, in essays deeds contrast to Python, which has equivalent power but is much easier to learn and use. Article Writing! I gave up Perl completely as soon as I learned Python, and so should you. Tcl/Tk I've done some simple neural network simulations with a graphical interface in Tcl/Tk.

Tcl was the original Unix scripting language, and is quite simple to use. However, I don't use it anymore because Python does everything Tcl/Tk do, it does it better, and it does much more. Kipling Essay! Put simply, Tcl blows. Fortran Fortran was my first programming language, but I haven't done serious work in it for article writing companies a long time. It's an easy language to learn but a pain to use for anything but number-crunching. Also, it encourages bad programming habits; I like to say that Fortran causes brain damage :-) I believe that early exposure to Fortran is the reason so few physicists can write decent programs. Pascal I programmed in Pascal years ago, but I no longer do, because there are much better alternatives. Pascal is homewrok help clean, simple, very limited, and totally boring. Javascript The client-side web scripting language.

I did a little Javascript hacking for a database-backed web site project. It's pretty straightforward. Eiffel Eiffel is a very nice object-oriented language that could potentially replace C++ or Java for many projects if enough people knew about it. It has a very powerful object system and supports Design by Contract, which is writing essentially an expanded assertion system that makes it much easier to on heroic deeds make very reliable software. Unfortunately, the compilers I've used produce code which is article not nearly as fast as code produced by C/C++ compilers, which rules it out for most of the stuff I'm interested in. In addition, it can't compete with Java for the things Java is best at ( e.g. Homewrok Help! portable graphics). Also, there is only one free implementation that I know of, the GNU SmartEiffel compiler (which is very good).

Eiffel also has some issues involving its type system which requires programs to do whole-program analysis at link time to make sure a program is article companies in uk valid; this makes the language much less attractive in the internet world where dynamic loading of code libraries is a normal part of island life. Smalltalk SmallTalk was one of the earliest object-oriented languages (not the first, though: Simula was the first). Article Writing Companies! It has not really caught on, probably because its syntax is quite odd, but it has had a major influence on deserted definition newer languages like Java and Python. There is a recent reimplementation called Squeak which is article writing really wonderful, is free software, and homewrok help is attracting a lot of attention; if you're interested in Smalltalk, you should start there. Although Smalltalk's syntax is odd, it's very consistent, and this makes Smalltalk extremely easy to article learn; you could summarize the entire language in one page. That makes sense, since it was originally designed to paper be a language that children could use.

Smalltalk has also been a heavy influence on other languages, notably the scripting language Ruby. Writing Companies! All computer language designers should study Smalltalk carefully; there is much to learn from it. Personally, studying Smalltalk gave me a big aha! moment: I never really understood the essence of object-oriented programming until I learned Smalltalk. Dylan Dylan is essays essentially a dialect of lisp with optional static typing and an infix syntax. If Dylan ever becomes more widely available it could become very popular as a fast scripting language. Definitely worth watching. Ruby Ruby is a scripting language that is sort of like a cross between Python and Smalltalk, with a dash of companies in uk Perl thrown in for bad measure.

It's more purely object-oriented than Python is, which I like, but it's also more syntactically heavy, which I dislike. If Python didn't exist, Ruby would be my scripting language of choice. J and APL J is the modern dialect of hurricane camille research APL, the famous array-processing language with all the funny characters. Article Writing! J uses ASCII characters only (fortunately) but is still incredibly cryptic. It's also proprietary, although free versions are available. In the right hands, I think J could be a pretty cool data-analysis language. Modula-3 Modula-3 is another object-oriented language descended from Pascal. Homewrok Help! It's no longer used much, but it was a major influence on Java and Python, so its genes live on :-) To me, one of writing companies its coolest features is the hurricane camille research, notion of an unsafe module that can perform low-level tasks usually done using C or C++. Article In Uk! This gives it much of the einstein, power of those languages, but unlike them, Modula-3 is safe by article companies in uk, default. The C# language adopted this feature. Prolog Prolog is camille basically an AI language which operates by defining facts and rules for article in uk deriving new facts from old ones.

I've read one book on Prolog but haven't done any real programming in publish a research paper it. It looks fascinating, though: it's a whole new paradigm of programming. m4 macro language I used this for setting up the companies, automatic configuration for my hobby project (GNU shogi). It only required about a couple of on heroic hundred lines of writing m4 code, which is just as well; it's pretty nasty. sed, awk These are Unix text-processing mini-languages. I've used them as part of kipling shell scripts, but don't claim to be an expert in either. Article Writing Companies! Anything awk can do can usually be done better by Python or Perl anyway. Programming languages I've written or worked on.

The GENESIS neural simulator I worked with for einstein essays my Ph.D. thesis included a home-brew script language imaginatively called SLI (for script language interpreter). I hacked on it a bit, but it was such a poorly designed piece of crap that I lost interest quickly. It served as a useful illustration of writing companies how not to design a language. I wrote an homewrok help, interesting scripting language called Tap (named after the fake rock band Spinal Tap). I designed it myself and wrote it entirely from scratch in ocaml. The idea behind Tap was to create a hybrid of Forth and Scheme.

It would have a postfix syntax like Forth (which means it has a lexer but no real parser; every token is executed immediately), but would also be a full-fledged functional language like Scheme, with a full environment model, first class functions, yadda yadda. I was interested to writing in uk see if merging the Forth approach to programming with the Scheme approach would be interesting. Kim Rudyard Essay! And, in fact, it was interesting. Here is some sample Tap code: I learned a lot from working on Tap, even though I don't work on it or use the writing in uk, language any more. I found that I had to fight the on heroic deeds, tendency to make the language overly complex, because ocaml made it so easy to make big changes (even stupid ones). Even so, I'm not happy with the article writing companies, result -- for one thing, the internals are too complex for camille my taste. I also tried too hard to article make it Lisp-like, for instance by trying to support things like syntactic macros which don't fit in nicely with a postfix model of computation. Similarly, I tried too hard to make the definition, base syntax user-modifiable. Article Writing In Uk! In contrast, I neglected vitally important things like modules which do fit in to the model and are essential for any real programming language IMO.

Also, using ocaml as the implementation language was a mixed blessing. It certainly improved my skill with the essays on heroic, language, it gives you garbage collection for free, and it's generally a joy to work with, but it's too restrictive in some ways. For instance, you can't have native-code shared libraries, which is a huge lose for a scripting language. Perhaps the biggest mistake I made with Tap is that I didn't have an application area defined before I started working on it. It's usually a good idea to have a specific application or set of applications to guide the language design. Picoforth is a Forth dialect (much more so than Tap, which was merely inspired by article companies, Forth). Paper! It preserves the things I liked about Forth (extreme interactivity, easy factoring, easy access to writing companies in uk data representations) while getting rid of the many things I hated about it. Its goal was to be a scripting language for essays deeds applications or libraries written in C (much like most scripting languages) and it's was written in C. It features conservative garbage collection, a much richer data model than Forth (which isn't saying much), and a better module (vocabulary) model.

The implementation is basically an indirect-threaded interpreter like Forth. One of these days, though, I really have to sit down and write a Forth implementation from scratch in assembly language, if only to teach myself assembly language. That's how Chuck Moore did it originally, and if it's good enough for Chuck. BogoScheme started as a tiny Scheme interpreter I wrote in a few hours in companies ocaml for an ocaml course I teach. There was nothing particularly interesting about the original version, aside from the fact that it was a Turing-complete Scheme interpreter in hurricane research about 700 lines of in uk code, with first-class functions and correct lexical scoping. The bogo- prefix doesn't mean that the language is broken; it just means that it (currently) lacks huge numbers of features that full-fledged Scheme interpreters have. Also, I liked the idea that source code files would have names ending in .bs . Truth in advertising! Of course, no language ever stays small for long, and since I wrote BogoScheme I've been systematically expanding it, with the hurricane camille research, goal of writing companies making a full R6RS-compliant Scheme implementation (the R6RS standard isn't finalized yet, but a draft is available at http://www.r6rs.org ). I also want to experiment with writing a Scheme compiler for hurricane research paper the language, something I've been interested in ever since I read Abelson and Sussman's Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs.

And, of course, it's really fun. My longer-term goal is to use BogoScheme as a vehicle for web programming. I have technical reasons for believing that Scheme would be a superb language for web programming, and I'd like to article writing try it out. Of course, I could use a pre-existing Scheme implementation, but that wouldn't be nearly as much fun. Other programming projects of kim rudyard kipling mine. mosh is a Unix shell I've written in Ocaml. It's very primitive at the moment, but I want to expand it until I can ditch bash and zsh entirely (at least, for article writing companies in uk interactive use).

The goal of mosh is to be a superb interactive shell, not a shell scripting language. I don't care much about shell scripting, because my shell scripts are never long (if they get longer than about twenty lines, I switch to a real scripting language like python instead). However, I do care a lot about comfortable interaction with a shell, and I want to use mosh to experiment with new features while simultaneously avoiding the einstein on music, gigantic amount of cruft that plagues zsh . Admittedly, this isn't an Earth-shaking project; it's mostly for fun and learning. The name mosh stands for M ike's O caml SH ell. Apache is the most-used web server in the world, and article in uk is totally open-source. I've compiled and homewrok help set up an Apache server for my database-backed web site project. I set up the server to article writing companies support PHP and MySQL as well, which required a little cleverness (but not much). Kim Rudyard! I like Apache; it seems to be robust and companies in uk effective. TeX/LaTeX The document-processing systems.

I use these to typeset all my scientific papers. I hate LaTeX, but I don't have a better alternative. I especially hate the TeX language that is at essays on music the heart of in uk LaTeX. Don Knuth may be a genius in the field of computer algorithms, but that doesn't make him a genius in computer language design. Ugh. CORBA I've played around with CORBA a bit, mainly using a Python ORB called Fnorb.

I was once excited about the potential of CORBA for homewrok help making network programming easier and for making it easy to writing companies in uk integrate modules written in different languages, but now I've lost interest. Essays On Heroic Deeds! CORBA is too big, too bulky, and writing companies in uk has too much overhead for my tastes. Also, it has a design-by-committee feel to essays it. CVS and Subversion. I have used CVS (Concurrent Version System) to manage source code revisions for article writing companies several projects. It's not perfect, but it gets the job done.

I've also set up CVS archives for the Gambit project and for other projects. Then I switched to Subversion, which I preferred, but not by much. Now I use Darcs (written in Haskell, by the way). Lex, Yacc and friends. Lex and Yacc (or their GNU equivalents, flex and bison) are, respectively, lexer and parser generators. They enable you to write parsers for new programming languages fairly easily, by stating the parsing rules. I've done some work on Yacc for einstein on music the Tspice project, and writing companies in uk I used lex extensively for my cellreader library in GENESIS. I also know the on heroic, Ocaml equivalents, ocamllex and companies in uk ocamlyacc , quite well.

Emacs and Vim Emacs and research Vim are two great programmer's text editors. I used Emacs exclusively for years until I finally discovered Vim, and I haven't used Emacs since. Vim's modal editing really saves time. SWIG SWIG (Simplified Wrapper and Interface Generator) is a nifty tool that makes it very easy to build scripting interfaces to article companies C or C++ code. I used it to kim rudyard kipling build a version of GENESIS that used Python as its scripting language.

autoconf autoconf is another cool tool that I used to automate the companies in uk, configuration process for my hobby project (GNU shogi). If you've ever had to hack through a dozen Makefiles to make a program compile on a different version of Unix than the one it was written on, then you can appreciate what autoconf does. With autoconf, you just have to do configure; make; make install and you're (usually) done.

2017 MBA Essay Questions: MIT Sloan. 2017 MIT Sloan Full-Time MBA Application Class of article writing companies in uk, 2020. As expected, MIT has retained their cover letter for the 2017 MBA application #8212; and they#8217;ve also added a video component! It has a prescribed question and they#8217;re calling it a #8220;video statement#8221; #8212; you have to publish paper, record your video and upload it to writing in uk, the app like another essay, as part of the deserted submission. The question is deceivingly simple: Please introduce yourself to article companies in uk, your future classmates via a brief video statement. Publish Paper. This one is writing companies, going to require some introspection and self-examination in order to answer well! You#8217;ll want to treat this more like a second essay not to the extent that you#8217;ll literally write out your answer, since that would seriously backfire on you if you were to sit there and read it while you were being filmed. Paper. Instead, you#8217;ll outline and prepare your content for both the video statement, and the cover letter, and the optional essay if you need it. Writing. Then, you#8217;ll write the cover letter (and write it again the essays revision process is article writing companies, critical) and review and essays adjust your ideas for the video statement. After the cover letter and resume (and optional essay) are all done, when you submit the companies app, then you#8217;ll also record your video statement too.

You need to know how you#8217;re going to kim rudyard kipling essay, handle it before you send it all in! This requires a concentrated approach. For the article companies in uk cover letter, which is another assignment that Brave Supplicants have found challenging, they#8217;ve thankfully given you BSers a break this year by expanding the max length of research, that cover letter by 50 words.
